It was a bit on the light side, as sci-fi goes, but I believe that to be the author's intent. It's essentially a character-driven apocalyptic story, which stands out from some of the more story-driven or action-oriented ones. What if civilization fails but the first few weeks without power aren't cataclysmically violent? What if people don't band together in roving gangs of cannibals? What if a plague of spiders follows? OK, that last one was specific to this story, I won't spoil any more of it. It was an engaging read, and I suspect people who like light sci-fi or just different sci-fi will enjoy this.

Here is a wonderful thriller that trades edged-your-seat adrenaline thrills for a more atmospheric creeping dread as odd occurrences slowly lead up to something terrible. What? Well, you'll have to read to find out, but I found the author's decision to eschew the cheap thrills of a new, ill-formulated twist every other page for a more deliberate and artful style to be refreshing, and a way in which this solid genre work stands above the crowd. Highly recommended.
